MakerDate Call for Artists

Assemble, a community space for arts and technology, announces a call for artists and makers of all kinds for a unique and interactive fundraising event. MakerDate 2012 is an auction pairing skill seekers with opportunities to learn something new. This event will also feature a raffle of original art objects and handmade crafts.

MakerDate 2012: About the fundraiser
Assemble is placing a local and regional call for artists, craft makers, designers and skill-owners for its first MakerDate fundraising event. It is our belief that curiosity breeds creativity, and intrigue is best satisfied through hands-on activities. This event takes the concept of date auctioning and re-dresses it with a purpose.  While it is always a possibility, we are not here to find love. Rather, MakerDate seeks to pair skilled creators with those that want to learn something new.  MakerDate will give attendees the chance to bid on “dates” with artists, crafters, or technologists who will work with the winning bidders to make a tangible or intangible object or teach them a skill. 

While assemble focuses on the intersection of art and technology, we encourage submissions from a wide range of artists and makers to provide attendees with a diverse range of learning opportunities. Music, art, crafting, technology, cooking or other creative or useful skill are just some of the areas that would help make this event come alive.

Makers interested in donating items for the raffle will have the chance to note so on the attached application form. Makers do not have to participate in the live auction to donate an item/items for the raffle. 

MakerDate Details:

·  Date: May 18, 2012

·  Time: 6pm-9pm

·  Location: Shadow Lounge, 5972 Baum Blvd. Pittsburgh, PA 15206

·  Type: Non-profit fundraiser

·  Description: As a participating Maker, your skills and/or work will be featured at the live event on May 18, 2012.  In addition, you will receive free entry for you and a guest (including 5 raffle tickets each), a write-up of your work on assemble’s Facebook page and website, and a nifty swag bag.

·  Requirements/Commitment: As a participating artist, you must be willing to donate at least 2 hours, but no more than 5 hours, of your time to the winning bidder over one to three sessions.

·  The date will take place at a separate time and venue TBD by the artist within 30 days following the MakerDate event.

·  All proceeds from the auction will go to assemble.

·  As assemble is a non-profit with 501 (c)3 status, your donation of time/material is tax deductible.

Artist Submission Requirements:

·  Makers who would like to be considered for participation should submit their application and statement no later than April 26, 2012.

·  Makers will be notified by April 27, 2012. Notifications will be sent out via e-mail with a memorandum of understanding.

Application Procedure:

1. Complete the artist application online. Click here for the application.   
2. Submit digital images, videos, sound recordings or on-line demonstrations of 2 individual works (if the work is 3d then 3 images of the individual work may be submitted for a total of 6 images.) Each image should be labeled properly with name, media, size and price and e-mailed tosara.assemble@gmail.com.
3. If the skill shared on your date has a non-tangible product, please send 2 examples of how you have used this skill to inform or create tosara.assemble@gmail.com along with completing the on-line artist application form.
4. Submit supporting artist materials such as artist resume, biography, press.

Assemble will select 15 artists to participate in the live auction.

Want to avoid the crowds and get first dibs on one-of-a-kind products?

Early Birdie Passes are $15 each, which provide shoppers with the exclusive opportunity to shop one hour before the event opens to the public. Early Birdie shoppers will have first pick to purchase all the unique and one-of-a-kind items that crafters will be selling and be given a bag full of goodies and coupons.

Only 200 Early Birdie Passes will be sold for the 10 to 11 a.m. preview on November 12th, the day of the event.

Early Birdie passes can be purchased online by filling out the information below OR at Wildcard (4209 Butler Street in Lawrenceville). Passes purchased online on or before Monday, November 7th will be mailed to you. Passes purchased online after Monday, November 7, will be available for pick up at Wildcard on or before 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11. You must present pass at Handmade Arcade on November 12 for 10 a.m. entry.

(Children 12 and under are admitted free with an adult.)

Marking its 8th anniversary, Handmade Arcade is guaranteed to be the shopping experience of the upcoming holiday season, with 140 innovative craft vendors from in and around Pittsburgh, across Pennsylvania and around the country. Its largest show to date!

Handmade Arcade features affordable, hand-constructed wares from some of the country’s most imaginative and talented crafters.

In addition, Handmade Arcade will also feature music by DJs David Pohl and Bad Seed, and snacks and refreshments for sale on site. Reflecting Handmade Arcade’s staunch make-it-yourself mission, the new Hands-on Handmade activity area offers shoppers of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to participate in engaging art and craft projects led by local artists and arts organizations.

Handmade Arcade will take place on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown.

All vendor applications must be submitted online. Completed applications are due by Sunday, September 11, 2011. Accepted vendors will be notified by Friday, September 30, 2011. Please be ready to submit three photos of your work when you fill out the online form. There is also a non-refundable $10 application fee due at the time of submission. For accepted vendors, the full vendor fee of $150 will be due on October 7, 2011. If you have any questions, please contact info@handmadearcade.com.

Hands-on Handmade is an interactive way to engage attendees and vendors through demonstrations and activities. We are seeking demonstrators and installation artists with ideas that WOW! Selected applicants will be part of the event’s Hands-on Handmade area on Saturday, November 12, 2011. Applications are now being accepted. The application deadline is Sunday, September 11 and selected applicants will be notified by Friday, September 30. Submit you idea here.

Note: This call is for Hands-on Handmade demonstrators and interactive artists only. Craft vendor applications will be available on August 8.
